Day 2 - Sam’s POV

Today was incredible, seeing countless images of the Colosseum in a textbook is one thing - standing beside it is another. The building is just one of the highlights of Rome, and I can't believe we got to tour it so early in the trip. It was nothing short of amazing.

The view, peering into the inside to see intricate rooms and passageways, how tiny I felt there— it was surreal to walk the same path as those who attended events at the Colosseum. Knowing the Romans had an organized seating and ticketing system was remarkable!!! Pictures do not do this monument justice with its size. Looking around and standing in this place is something I will never fully process.

This type of feeling continued throughout the tour of the Roman Forum. There was so much to see and wow…the views! When we got to the top, it overlooked the city of Rome and the whole forum. I could see the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica!

Within the forum was the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of the Deified Caesar, the Mamertine Prison, the Curid, the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Romulus, the Arch of Sepitimius Severus, and the Cloaca Maxima. This entire forum was located between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills. Hearing our tour guide, Thomas, talk about Mark Antony and how we were walking down the same steps as he was on the Via Sacra was mind-blowing. Our tour guide told us how most of the forum used to be covered by a swamp and had to be dug out! It really put into perspective how much history we were experiencing by walking through here. Yet, there are still things we don’t know and may never know! We also got to see the Italian Capitol building, which was HUGE. We concluded the day by visiting the Capitoline Museum, where we saw the statue of Marcus Aurelius, the head of Constantine, sculpture of Romulus and Remus, and finally, two original Caravaggios. What a day!
